EV Home Charging Cost in India — 2026

2026-04-22

গাইড নিবন্ধগুলি ইংরেজিতে উপলব্ধ। উপরে আপনার ভাষায় একটি সারসংক্ষেপ দেখানো হয়েছে।

With EV sales crossing 20 lakh units in India in FY2026, the question nearly every new EV owner asks in the first week is: "What does it actually cost to charge this thing at home?". Here's the honest 2026 answer, with numbers you can cross-check on your bill.

The basic math

Cost per charge = Battery size (kWh) × domestic unit rate (₹/unit) ÷ charger efficiency. Home AC chargers are typically 88–92% efficient, so multiply battery kWh by about 1.1.

Real 2026 numbers for popular EVs

Assuming a domestic tariff of ₹7/unit (national median in 2026):

  • Tata Tiago EV (24 kWh, ~250 km range): ₹185 per full charge = ₹0.74/km.
  • Tata Nexon EV MR (30 kWh, ~325 km): ₹230/charge = ₹0.71/km.
  • MG ZS EV (50.3 kWh, ~460 km): ₹387/charge = ₹0.84/km.
  • Mahindra BE 6 (59 kWh, ~550 km): ₹454/charge = ₹0.82/km.
  • Hyundai Creta Electric (51 kWh, ~470 km): ₹392/charge = ₹0.83/km.
  • BYD Atto 3 (60 kWh, ~520 km): ₹462/charge = ₹0.89/km.

Compared to ₹6.5–8/km for petrol at ₹100/litre — EV home charging is 8–10× cheaper per km.

State-wise EV tariffs (much cheaper than domestic)

Several states have introduced dedicated EV charging tariffs below general domestic rates:

  • Delhi: ₹4.50/unit on a separate EV meter (single-part tariff).
  • Maharashtra: ₹6.02/unit EV tariff.
  • Karnataka: ₹5/unit via BESCOM's EV tariff.
  • Tamil Nadu: ₹6.65/unit for public charging, home charging on domestic slab.
  • Telangana: ₹6.40/unit on a registered EV connection.

Check if your DISCOM offers a separate EV meter. The ₹5,000–12,000 installation cost pays back in months for anyone driving 1,500+ km/month.

ToD hacks for EV owners

Under the new ToD tariffs (see our ToD tariff guide), charging between 10 PM and 6 AM applies the off-peak rate; between 10 AM and 4 PM, the discounted solar rate. Schedule your EV to charge in those windows via the car's app — you save 20–40% vs plugging in at 7 PM.

Solar + EV: the best of both

A 3 kW rooftop solar system generates ~12 kWh/day. A 20 km/day commuter uses ~3 kWh/day. The solar pays for the EV's entire fuel cost — and enough to cover AC and refrigeration. Payback for the combined system: 4–5 years.

Calculate your own per-km cost with our EV charging calculator (enter your car's battery size and your local tariff).
