How to Read Your Electricity Meter

2026-04-22

If you've ever stared at the blinking digits on your electricity meter and wondered which number matters, you're not alone. Reading your own meter is the fastest way to sanity-check your DISCOM's bill and catch overcharges early.

1. Identify your meter type

Most Indian households today have digital static meters — the black or grey box with an LCD display that cycles through readings automatically. Older homes may still have electromechanical meters with a spinning aluminum disc and a mechanical odometer-style dial.

2. Find the "kWh" reading

On a digital meter, the display cycles through multiple values every few seconds: voltage, current, power factor, and the kWh total. The number you want is labelled kWh (sometimes just "kW h"), usually 6–7 digits long. This is the cumulative units reading — your monthly consumption is current reading − previous reading.

3. Read your previous and current readings

  1. Note down the reading on the 1st of each month (or on your billing date).
  2. Note it again next billing cycle.
  3. Subtract: that's your consumption in units (kWh).

Our bill calculator accepts both previous and current readings directly — just toggle to "Meter Reading" mode.

4. Three-phase meters

Three-phase meters display the same kWh total (plus kVAh for industrial/commercial consumers on RKVAh tariffs). The calculation method is identical: difference between readings = units consumed.

5. What if my bill differs from my reading?

Bills often include estimated readings if the meter reader couldn't access your premises. If your bill shows "E" or "R" next to the reading, it's an estimated/reset reading. Always cross-check with your own note.

Meter fault warning signs

  • Meter disc rotates (or display increments) even when mains is switched off.
  • Readings jump implausibly between billing cycles.
  • LCD is dim, flickering, or partially blank.

Report any of these to your DISCOM immediately — you're entitled to free meter testing.
